Portable Document Format (pdf) is a file format created by Adobe Systems. It can be read natively by Windows 8/8.1 and Windows RT, but many software programs exist to read PDFs on older versions of Windows, including Adobe Reader.

Open Office XML Document (docx) is the default file format for Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013. It can be read by Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013 and LibreOffice. It can also be read without additional software in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (via the included WordPad accessory) and by some older versions of Microsoft Word by installing the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack.

OpenDocument Text (odt) is an open format that can be read by many word processing programs, including LibreOffice, Microsoft Office Word 2007 (if Service Pack 2 has been applied), Microsoft Word 2010/2013 and many other programs. It can also be read without additional software in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (via the included WordPad accessory).
